First time reader of your newsletter and I adore it & you!

As a six-months-pregnant mum-to-be, I’ve developed a voracious appetite for honest parental (particularly maternal) perspectives & reflections on all the deep and true feelings to be encountered in parenthood. Helps me feel less alone amidst all the unknowable mysteries on my horizon, I suppose; though everyone’s stories are different, I feel there is some universal thread woven through it all that connects us.

Thank you for your realness 🤍 you made me laugh & cringe at my future mom self in the best most relatable way.

ahh the tenderness and honesty of these feelings is what keeps me coming back to this newsletter. and cake! the cake I’m still craving since seeing it even though I don’t really like cake? idk! postpartum is weird! but I’ve been enjoying catching up on my reading since giving birth and loved knowing I’d have four of your letters waiting in my inbox. 🧡

Thank you so much, Alyssa! That makes me so happy. This cake is really good if you find yourself craving one. I noticed that there’s an updated version of it in her new book.

Kid birthdays are the best. I have loved every single party I've planned and elaborate cake I've baked / decorated for my three. One of the sad things about them being teens is that they don't necessarily want my deeply themed parties any more. But they do still want cake. I love Ina Garten's coconut layer cake and her huge sheet cake that is in her Family cookbook. Huge cakes are just fun. I highly recommend getting plenty of cake pans for all occasions. And then, for when Tycho is a little older, keep a fully stocked, within-reach cupboard of cake and cookie decorating supplies. Sprinkles, colored sugars, piping bags, decorating gels (gross, but not to kids), an array of Wilton's themed and shaped sugar decorations, cupcake liners, every kind of baking chocolate, plus a big box of Wilton's 100 cookie cutter shapes. Because...you never know. And these things keep forever. My baking / decorating cabinet is as well-stocked as my first aid supply but so much more fun. The kids use it all the time.

Happy birthday to Tycho!!! One is such a sweet and special age.
